Virginia Shults McCanlies was born in Rising Star, Texas on February 29, 1928. She graduated from Rising Star High School at the age of 16. After high school, she attended Texas Tech University, where she earned a teaching certificate and went on to teach high school typing and shorthand. She married Phil McCanlies of Cisco, Texas in 1947 and, although she lived in several states (Texas, New Mexico, California, Washington, and Nebraska), she always considered Texas her home. She often said that she started in Texas and was making a circle on her way back to Texas.
Virginia came to know Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior at a young age and remained a faithful follower of Christ her entire life. She was a shining example of both a Christian follower and leader, participating in and teaching many Sunday school classes, youth groups, and Bible studies. She lead by both word and deed and believed wholeheartedly in God’s word and the power of prayer. She was the definition of selfless. Friends and family depended on her in countless ways and she always put the needs of others before her own and prayed for them diligently.
Virginia entered the kingdom of heaven on July 2, 2017, and is rejoicing with Jesus and the many friends and family members who have gone on before her. She is preceded in death by her parents Ashel and Love Shults; her siblings A.T. Shults Jr., Glenn Shults, and Dorothy Shults Brown. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her brother Jack Shults; daughters Kay Sorenson, Lee Ann Young, and Dona Housh; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her.
