Vernon Ray Greenwood

Vernon Ray Greenwood, 76, of Cisco, Texas, hung up his spurs on July 7th, 2026.

He was born on October 1st, 1950 to Mary Sue (Rielly) & Alva Ray Greenwood in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

Vernon was a cowboy, truck driver, father, and friend. He started truck driving at age 13 and went on to haul cattle for many years. He loved and lived the cowboy way of life. He was always there to lend a helping hand or give advice where it was needed. Vernon’s happiest times were working horseback alongside his family. He had a passion for trying to save animals and a way with horses. He was a hard worker and, quite literally, wanted to go out with his boots on.

Without hesitation, he stepped in and raised his two nieces and nephew (Verna, Dessie, and Alva) as his own. In January of 2003 he welcomed a son, Colton Ray Greenwood, and in June of 2004 his daughter, Mary Merrie Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva & Mary Greenwood; as well as his sister, Katheryn (Greenwood) Groves.

Vernon is survived by his children Verna Chadwick of Cisco,Tx; Dessie McCoy (Josh) of Eliasville, Tx; Al Greenwood (Donnie) of Cisco, Tx; Colton Greenwood (Katelyn) of Cisco, Tx; Mary Greenwood of Cisco, Texas; a brother, Tommy Greenwood (Lisa) of Midland, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 10 AM at Mitchell Cemetery.
